Club still in Europe after winter thanks to 3-0 win over Zenit

Club Brugge cruised 3-0 past Zenit Saint Petersburg on matchday 5 of the Champions League group stage. Charles De Ketelaere opened the scoring for Club and after the break Vanaken en Lang decided the game with a goal each. Club is sure of a spot in the Europa League and can advance to the next round of the Champions League if it winst next week in Rome.

Two changes to Clement's line-up compared to the game against Mouscron. Federico Ricca played as left full-back, which meant that Charles De Ketelaere could move up to the centre forward position. Emmanuel Dennis started in this game as well, playing on the right wing. David Okereke and Michael Krmenčík were on the bench. Mats Rits (suspended) and Krépin Diatta (injured) were both unavailable.

A draw sufficed for Club to be sure of European football after the winter break. The blue and black started the game lively, but Zenit was well-organized and left little time and space for Club to create danger. Lang and Dennis tried from distance, but both shots were blocked.

Zenit hit Club on the break and scored on their first occassion, but Azmoun's goal was disallowed for offside. Club responded immediately when De Ketelaere tried to put Lang through on goal with a back heel, but a defender blocked it.

The blue and black kept the pressure high and were rewarded after half an hour play. Ricca's low cross was cleared by a defender, into the path of Charles De Ketelaere who blasted in from the edge of the area. A few minutes later Vormer picked out Vanaken with a corner kick, the Belgian headed towards the far corner, but goalkeeper Kerzhakov pulled off a great save to palm it away. On the stroke of half-time Kerzhakov was equal to Noa Lang's powerful strike so it remained 1-0 at the break.

Zenit coach Semak clearly wasn't satisfied with what he had seen and made three changes during half-time. One of them, forward Mostovoy, scored inside the first minutes, but with his hand so the goal was rightfully chalked off. While Zenit were the better side at the start of the second half, it was Club that struck again: De Ketelaere was brought down inside the box and the Dutch referee Gözübüyük had no alternative but to point to the spot. Hans Vanaken behind the ball and he didn't miss: 2-0.

Club was now firmly in the driving seat and wanted a third goal. Vormer with a cross, but Vanaken's looping header ended on the roof of the goal. But twenty minutes before the end, Club killed the game with a third goal. Dennis found Noa Lang inside the area with a low cross and the Dutchman curled it into the far corner out of Kerzakhov's reach.

In the final minutes Sutormin slammed the ball against the bar for Zenit, while substitute Okereke scuffed his finish just wide of the target. It remained 3-0 and Club celebrated its first home win in the Champions League since 2005.

The blue and black are already certain of a spot in the Europa League, but can still advance to the Champions League 1/8th final if they beat Lazio Roma next week.
