Club suffers 4-1 defeat at Manchester City

Two new faces in Philippe Clement's starting eleven compared to Saturday's match against Sint-Truiden: Stanley Nsoki - suspended at Stayen - joined Mechele and Hendry in defence, Mats Rits replaced Éder Balanta who had so sit out a one-match suspension. In front Noa Lang and Charles De Ketelaere had to create the danger. Bas Dost had to settle for the bench, just like Belgian international Keven De Bruyne for the home side.

Manchester City dominated possession from the first whistle, forcing the blue and black on their own half. Fifteen minutes into the game, after a blocked shot by Bernardo Silva and Sobol's miscued volley for Club, the hosts upped the pressure. Cancelo's strike took a deflection before it landed into the feet of Gündogan at the far post, but the German poked it into the side-netting from closeby. Cancelo again with an effort - this time he curled the ball against the far post - and Foden forced Mignolet into making a save. Shortly after that save, City found the breakthrough when Foden tapped in Cancelo's low cross.

But Club wasn't fazed and responded swiftly: Ederson parried away Vanaken's strike, but then De Ketelaere's cross went in after it had richocheted via Silva and Jones. The equaliser boosted the moral of the blue and black, while City couldn't poke through Club's defensive organization. On the contrary: Ederson kept out Hendry's header and was quick to the ground to deny De Ketelaere. On the other side of the pitch Rits cleared Walker's cross before Gündogan could convert.

The hosts started the second half lively with a number of good chances. Mignolet needed a good save to palm away Mahrez' shot, while Cancelo's flew just over the top corner. A few moments later Mignolet saved Stones' header and Foden flashed one over and wide of the target. Club got out of the pressure after ten minutes when De Ketelaere made his way towards Ederson, but he couldn't get his shot on target.

The moment Club thought it had restored the balance a bit, City took the lead again. Cancelo whipped in a curling cross towards the far post and Riyad Mahrez headed in: 2-1. A few moments later Gündogan missed two opportunities, while Vanaken's strike was blocked. No equalizer for the blue and black, instead it was City that doubled their lead. Gündogan found space on the left-hand side and squared it to substitute Raheem Sterling who slotted home.

In the closing minutes of the match City were still looking for more goals. De Bruyne couldn't get his shot on target, while Mignolet had to rush out twice to deny Palmer and Jesus. For Club, Hans Vanaken saw a low effort blocked once again. On the other side of the pitch Mechele needed a full stretch to clear a cross before Palmer could get it on goal. Deep into stoppage time City got their three-goal lead when Gabriel Jesus left Mignolet with a strike in the far corner.
