Club wins city derby 2-1

Club Brugge has beaten Cercle 2-1 in the city derby. Hans Vanaken opened the scoring, Krépin Diatta doubled the lead after an hour play. Kylian Hazard pulled one back in stoppage time. The blue and black now have a 15-point lead on AA Gent that lost at home.

Clement made one change compared to the team that had beaten Genk a week before. Siebe Schrijvers replaced Percy Tau in front and teamed up with Charles De Ketelaere. Both teams were brimming with confidence. Bernd Storck's team won its last four games and moved from the last place to fourteenth.

Club grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck, but that didn't result in real danger. Fifteen minutes into the game De Ketelaere latched onto a through ball, but he lost the ball. A few minutes later his left-footed strike trickled wide.

Club upped the pressure on Cercle. Mechele headed Schrijvers' corner kick wide, while Schrijvers' efforts went wide and over the target and Cercle keeper Moser was forced into making a save on a shot by Sobol.

Club controlled the game and were close to the opening goal when Vanaken picked Schrijvers out with a cross, but the forward didn't connect properly with the ball. Five minutes before the break Vanaken broke deadlock. He cut inside from the left-hand side and fired it in from outside the box.

Just before the break it was almost 2-0 when Schrijvers feeded De Ketelaere, but the academy player saw his effort saved by Moser.

More of the same after the break with chances for the blue and black. The first one was for De Ketelaere who volleyed a cross just wide. A few minutes later Vanaken chipped the ball into the path of Mats Rits who had darted inside the box. Rits scored, but VAR cancelled the goal because Rits had handled the ball with his hand.

Cercle tried to level the score through De Belder, but his effort didn't worry Mignolet.

Club dictated the pace of the game and doubled the lead on the hour-mark. Krépin Diatta copied Vanaken's goal by cutting inside - this time from the right-hand side - and slamming it into the near corner from outside the box.

The game looked decided, but Club had a scare when Mignolet kicked the ball into the feet of de Belder but he was too surprised to put it into the empty net. A few minutes later Mignolet was equal to a shot by Hotic. On the other side of the pitch Diatta's effort went the wrong side of the pitch, while De Ketelaere aimed too high.

Club controlled the game in the closing minutes. Apart from an effort by De Belder, Cercle were rather harmless. Until stoppage time, when substitute Kylian Hazard struck home at the back post.

It was too little too late for Cercle to get one more goal, so the game ended in a small win for Club Brugge who increase their lead on AA Gent to fifteen points.
