Club's cup run ends at Standard after tumultuous einding

Club Brugge's Belgian cup campaign ended at Standard, following a 1-0 defeat. Muleka scored the only goal of the evening. David Okereke equalised in stoppage time, but referee Verboomen disallowed the goal for a supposed handball of Mignolet.

Back from isolation after a positive COVID-19 test: coach Philippe Clement, Hans Vanaken, Noa Lang, Stefano Denswil and Matej Mitrovic. Clement immediately dropped Vanaken in the starting eleven, who replaced Thomas Van den Keybus. In front Youssouph Badji replaced the injured Bas Dost. The Senegalese spearheded the three-man attack with Ignace Van der Brempt and Tahith Chong on the wing. The duo forced Dirar and Sobol on the bench.

It was Club that created the first danger of the evening: Badji lashed an effort at goal, but it was blocked by Bokadi. On the other side of the pitch Kossounou thwarted Klauss, while Laifis headed a corner kick over the crossbar.

Ignace Van der Brempt tried his luck twice in quick succession. After a good interception the young winger squared the ball in front of goal, but there was no teammate at the other end. Moments later he saw his volley sail wide of the far post.

It was an intense and physical game, but referee Verboomen kept his cards in his pocket for now. Club tried to up the pressure. Vanaken's searching pass didn't reach Van der Brempt and Ricca's header went wide.

The best chance was for Tahith Chong who darted into the penalty area, but the Dutchman's shot was palmed away by Bodart. On the stroke of half-time Mignolet kept out Klauss' effort, who was then flagged offside.

At half-time Stefano Denswil came on for Federico Ricca, but it was Standard that almost immediately opened the scoring. Klauss fizzed a ball in front of goal which was slammed home by Muleka via the underside of the crossbar.

Shortly after the goal Clement brought on Noa Lang. With the Dutchman between the lines, Club started to play more freely again. Bodart palmed away two crosses by Chong and Vanaken scuffed his finish wide.

Standard focussed on its defensive duties and tried to be dangerous on the break, but Amallah didn't connect well with the ball on of those counterattacking moves. With twenty minutes on the clock David Okereke and Daniel Pérez came on. The latter made his debut for Club, who pressed forward. When Vanaken volleyed the ball towards goal, Bokadi blocked the effort.

Eight minutes before the end, Club had to continue with ten men when Kossounou was sent off with a straight red following a challenge on Muleka.

Despite being a man down, Club were still pushing for the equaliser. Vanaken just couldn't find the target, while Bodart saved Vormer's shot and Balanta's header.

Deep into stoppage time Club looked to have done it after all on the last corner kick of the match. Okereke pounced home from close range on a header by Denswil, but the referee disallowed the goal for an alledged handball of Mignolet. He then decided to allow the goal, only to overturn his own decision again. Result: it remained 1-0, which meant Club's cup run ends in the quarter-finals.
