Borussia Dortmund - Club's first opponent in the Champions League - sent 1. FC Heidenheim away 4-2.
Dortmund fell short of a draw at Werder Bremen last week, so could ill afford dropping the points at their own Signal Iduna Park to keep leaders Bayern Munich in their sights.
The hosts started the match strongly and soon forced several chances. 10 minutes into the game, the first goal fell, as Donyell Malen was able to put the 1-0 on the board on a pass from Adeyemi. The same Adeyemi was the finisher 7 minutes later, netting the 2-0 into the far corner on a Brandt cross.
Heidenheim finally found its way into the game, and with five minutes on the clock in the first half, the tying goal came as Pieringer headed the ball nicely past Kobel into goal. But the joy was short-lived, as an industrious Adeyemi scored his second goal of the evening. A dummy by Guirassy on a low cross allowed Adeyemi to slide the ball at the first post. 3-1 at the stroke of halftime.
Dortmund controlled the game in the second half, and seemed to be heading for a quiet evening, until Süle brought down Kaufmann inside the box. An opportunity Breunig did not let pass, converting the penalty unerringly: 3-2 with fifteen minutes to play. An exciting final minutes of the game e resulted in slight chances on both sides, until Traoré handled the ball resulting in a spot kick awarded by VAR. Emre Can with the cool head, wrapping it all up for the 4-2.
7 out of 9 takes the Borussen to 2nd place in the Bundesliga. On Sunday the yellow blacks pay a visit to last season's revelation, VfB Stuttgart.
