A goal from Vormer bags the three points at Lokeren
Club Brugge have ended 2018 with a narrow 0-1 win away against Lokeren. Substitute Ruud Vormer scored the only goal of the evening twenty minutes before the end.
Stefano Denswil and Ruud Vormer both returned from suspension for the visit at Lokeren, but coach Ivan Leko picked out the same eleven players who had beaten Antwerp on Sunday. Club travelled to Daknam with lots of confidence after Sunday's 5-1 win and were eager to break the deadlock early in the game.
Schrijvers looked like putting Club 1-0 up in the second minute of the game when Mitrović' header was parried away into the path of the forward who found the back of the net, but Schrijvers had strayed offside and the goal was disallowed.
After the good start, the match slowed down rapidly.
The blue and black had started the game well, but the hosts restored the balance quickly and created a few chances. Jovanevic' effort took a deflection and went wide, Cevallos and Overmeire couldn't get their shot on target.
Fifteen minutes into the game Club had the best chance when Emmanuel Denis cut inside from his left-hand side, but the Nigerian only stung the palms of goalkeeper Verhulst.
Club played too lethargic and misplaced too many passes to disorganize Lokeren. On the half-hour mark Wesley dispossessed Deschacht, but his cross was cleared. On the stroke of half time both teams created one more chance. First De Ridder couldn't convert Cevallos' cross and on the other side of the pitch Schrijvers didn't connect with Dennis well-timed cut-back.
Club upped the tempo after the break and immediately put pressure on Lokeren's defence, but Verhulst saved Wesley's shot and smothered Schrijvers' cross. The best chances was again for Dennis, but the goalkeeper pulled of a brilliant save to deny the Nigerian winger.
The home side didn't crack and responded with two attempts by Jovanevic, but Horvath wasn't troubled.
On the hour-mark Dennis tried his luck again when he met Mata's cross, but his header went just wide.
Halfway tthe second half Leko intervened with a double substitution: Cools and Vormer on, Mata and Nakamba off. That change immediately resulted in a goal. Verhulst saved Cools' cross, but a few minutes later he was beaten when Schrijvers found Vormer with a raking pass and the Dutchman fired into the far corner.
Lokeren immediately tried to level the score, but Terki didn't connect well with De Ridder's cross and headed over the crossbar.
Trond Sollied sent his team forward in the closing minutes, but Club handled the pressure well. Horvath was quick off his line to fist away the ball before Jovanevic could be dangerous and De Ridder just couldn't reach a cross.
In the closing minutes Club almost scored a second goal, but Schrijvers aimed his effort on Verhulst and Wesley couldn't beat the goalkeeper either.
A narrow 0-1 win, but enough to end the year on a high.
