Hans Vanaken: "It really wasn't easy at some stages"

Hans Vanaken saw his week end with a downer. After winning the Golden Boot on Wednesday, Club started 2019 with a defeat.

"The conceding goal came from a corner. It was their first ball in the box and it falls in. Then you know against a team like that it can become very difficult. Charleroi is a defensive team and then it is difficult to find openings. It wasn't our best game today either, and at many stages things were not going well. A ball hit the bar and the post and for me it was also a one hundred percent penalty. I had a good feeling about the match though. We did find the opening a few times and at the end we had a chance for Wesley. On the left side they often came with three, four men to close everything down. I gave full throttle and tried to help the team. When that ball from Clinton goes in in the first half, it's something else. It's now back to work for the upcoming week."

Charleroi did come up dangerously a few times. "We were often on the attack and they speculated on the counter. Then you often end up man-to-man and you get dangerous situations, but we took that risk. Ten points is the gap now, we can't change that. Wednesday was a great night for Club Brugge, but Thursday it was already back to focus on today's match. It was no problem to turn the knob around either. Next week it's back to winning and seeing that the gap doesn't widen. We just have to look at ourselves and win matches ourselves. We'll see where Genk leave points." (KN)
