Despite several chances in the final half-hour, Club could not reel in a draw or a win at the KAA Gent Arena. A visibly disappointed Hans Vanaken reflected on the match.
"I didn't think it was a high quality match. There were few chances from either side. In such matches it is important to seize the moments. What worked against Osasuna didn't work today. They scored from two or three opportunities, so they grabbed their moments, like that goal just after halftime. That's a very annoying moment to get a goal against. We created too little threat ourselves, but at the end we still had some chances to definitely get a point."
AA Gent started the match eagerly "You know when you come here. It's always like that. It's the match of the year for them. The first 20 to 25 minutes we struggled with that. Afterwards, we came through. In the second half we were better and had superiority after their goal, but the efficiency was lacking. All in all, I think our season start was successful. We had hoped to go into the break with a good result. Unfortunately, that is not the case now, but that doesn't throw away what we have built up in recent weeks. Now it's up to us to continue working and be there again after the internationals."
Vanaken scored the 1-1 just before halftime and responded with a broad smile toward the Ghent crowd. "Something like that has to be possible. They reacted to me after the missed chance and two minutes later I score. Then something like that has to be possible. I don't have a problem with their reaction towards me, they probably don't have a problem with mine towards them either. That's part of soccer." (EV)
