Ivan Leko: “Give our fans a nice ending on Sunday”
A downcast Ivan Leko after Club's defeat in Liège. Still, Club's T1 stressed just how good a season his Club Brugge has played.
“It's a real pity we couldn't hold on until the very final game. What I feel most right now, is that my players have played a fantastic season. We had high ambitions, worked hard, and produced some fabulous football at times. Both in the league and in the Champions League. We had a fine season, but what happened today is just one of those things. We lacked a bit of freshness and circulation to be able to create a difference here. Plenty of possession, but only few clear chances. It was really a matter of seizing the moment, but it was Standard that scored with perfect timing. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but this defeat is hard to accept. We didn't achieve our dream, but we did give it our all.”
On Sunday, Club Brugge takes on Antwerp at home. With nothing left to win or lose, Blauw-Zwart wants to close the season with nothing less than the three points. "Congratulations to Genk. They were top this season, but we can also be proud with what we achieved. On Sunday, we want to finish this beautiful season on a high note. The fans have been outstanding, both at home and on the road, so we should give them something in return. My last game as a coach on Sunday? Anything's possible in football. I gave my everything for this club in the past two years. We turned this club into an institution bringing fear to anyone, and that's something I'm really proud of. Should it be my final game on Sunday, I want to leave this place with a smile on my face. What matters most right now, is to offer our fans a fine ending to the season. The game against Antwerp is always dear to them, so we will give everything we've got.” (SF)
