Ivan Leko: “Wrote history today”
A beaming coach after Club's 0-4 win at Monaco. He reckons the victory is one for the history books.
“We came here with lots of respect and an idea on how we could win this game, but I could never have expected a broad win like this. We knew Monaco's form was sub standard, but still, to be winning 0-4 wasn't even a probable scenario in my wildest dreams. To be claiming a result like this, as a tiny Belgian team, that's just brilliant. We wrote history here today. We deserved better in our first three games, but didn't get what we deserved. Today we did, and we should enjoy every moment of it. Monaco may be in a crisis, but with Falcao, Tielemans, Chadli and Glik, they still have quality to spare.”
24 minutes down the track, Blauw-Zwart was in a comfortable 0-3 lead, but Leko made sure his players stayed focused until the very last whistle. “There are plenty of examples of teams who give away a 0-3 result. That's why I told my team at half time that they should keep in mind the basics and rules of football. That's why the second half satisfied me even more, as we kept our focus until the last second.”
The win takes Club Brugge to four points. With just the one point after four games, and the fact that they did worse in the encounters with Clbu, the Monaco team now needs to make up at least four points vis-à-vis Club Brugge in the last two games. "Anything's possible in football, but the fact of the matter is that we actually have a four point lead. Which means we're about 70% sure of qualifying. But we will only be looking at ourselves in the last two games. We shouldn't be thinking about how the others are doing.”
As to the key moments in the game, Leko was clear.
(SF)
