Marítimo sent away 2-0

Keeping Maritimo Funchal (Por) at bay, Club Brugge has earned its first three points in the Europa League. After an hour's play, Carlos Bacca took Club in the lead with a brilliant goal, and ten minutes later he teed up Bjorn Vleminckx to make it 2-0 on the night.

The team that had grabbed a point in the weekend at AA Gent was changed in one position: up front, Bjorn Vleminckx came in for Mohamed Tchite, out injured. Club's midfield clearly had attack in mind, with Blondel, Odjidja and Vazquez.

In the very first minute of the game, Blauw-Zwart had an open chance to open the score. Odjidja found Lestienne on the left, who produced a low cross, but Bacca went over the ball, and by the far post Vleminckx was too surprised to score. A bit later, the blonde striker was unable to make the most of Vazquez' free kick.

Marítimo had some fiesty players in its mids, but never really gave the impression it could seriously unsettle Club. The home team was in full control, and passing lead to some chances. First Lestienne was inches late upon Vleminckx' cross, and a bit later goalie Salin saved the day as Vazquez from just outside the box went for the first post.

Another Vazquez cross went missing a bit later, this time Vleminckx falling short. The best chance, however, was for the visitors; flimsy defending lead to Joao Luiz firing from outside the box, and the swooping ball was tapped by Jorgacevic against the crossbar. A narrow escape for Club, which couldn't do more than a blocked shot by Vleminckx before the break.

It was a Club with more grinta coming out of the dressing rooms, but the first chances were for Maritimo. Rodrigo Antonio and Fidelis first didn't do enough on the break, and a bit later Jorgacevic held a low sliding shot by Rodrigo Antonio tight.

Club seemed to be trembling, but after sixty minutes Carlos Bacca decided his time had come. The Columbian took a deep pass by Vazquez out of the air in style, went past his man and fired the ball in the far corner, beating the Maritimo goalie for the first time in Europe this season (1-0).

On the other side of the pitch, Jorgacevic saved Joao Guilherme's free kick, but with twenty minutes on the clock, again Bacca decided the game. A clever deep ball by Figueras allowed the striker to go at the keeper alone, and just before the keeper got to it, Bacca tapped the ball to Vleminckx, who had followed well to score an easy 2-0.

By the end of the game, Carlos Bacca continued being a threat to the Portuguese defense. A lob and two thrilling shots went centimeters wide. Lestienne also saw his fine effort saved by an attentive Salin, while Jorgacevic saved Danilo Dias' shot. 2-0, so the points stayed at Jan Breydel, the first win for Club in this Europa League edition.
