Mats Rits: “I'm very thankful towards our coach”
With Brandon Mechele out suspended, Ivan Leko had a trick up his sleeve by lining up Mats Rits in the heart of defense, a first for the midfielder, who put in a fine performance.
“Not exactly the finest of football today, but there have been chances on either side of the pitch. We really should have tucked that Wesley chance in at the start of the first half, it would have put the result beyond doubt sooner. But I reckon we deserved to win. For ourselves, for the club, for the fans it was great to be finishing like this. A win in the dying minutes of the game, it shows we were willing to do whatever it took, which lead to this win.”
Puzzled looks as the line-up was announced: Mats Rits manned the heart of defense. “Those duels with Mbokani were quite fiery, I can tell you that. He's bigger and broader than I am. A new experience for sure, it was a nice experience. Not that we could have done it any differently today. It was a bit of a shock to see my name there. I never expected to be playing there, but I pulled my weight. When the trainer needs me there, I'll do what I can.”
His first year at Club Brugge was definitely up to par. "I loved working with Ivan Leko. We had some great results, and he has always been correct. I learned a lot, and played much more than I reckoned at first. I'm very grateful for that. As to me personally, the end of the season comes with a good feeling. It's a pity we didn't win the league, but all in all I reckon we had a fine season, and a fabulous campaign in Europe. A great Genk keeps us from prolonging our title. It's not in the Play-Offs that we lost out. It was in the games against Waasland-Beveren, Mouscron and Zulte Waregem at home.” (KN)
