Mats Rits: “More was in it than this draw”

Not your regular Club Brugge facing Manchester United: skipper Vormer started from the bench, leaving midfield to both Balanta and Rits. The latter put in an excellent performance, but reckoned more was in it for his team.

“It's a bit of a mixed bag, really. 1-1 against an outfit with this reputation is definitely not bad, but I do reckon more was in it than this draw. We had scrutinised their system well, and knew what to do. Everyone on the pitch knew what was expected of him, allowing us to be at least as good as Manchester. It's a real pity we concede in such an unfortunate way, as I reckon we were well in control of the game at that moment. We once again showed we are not without a chance against top teams like this, but we do realise we have made it a bit harder on ourselves in view of the second leg.”

Just like he did against Real Madrid, Emmanuel Dennis made quite the mark with his agility, even if that doesn't come as a surprise to the Club players. “No, definitely not. We all know he can be dangerous when given a bit of space, and after that long ball by Simon (Mignolet, edit), Dennis beat the Man U defenders to the ball very neatly. With a fine lob, he put it against the back of the nets. In all honesty, we expected Manchester to adapt a more open playing style, but they adhered to their compact style, making it hard on us to combine. Based on the number of chances, maybe there was more in it that this 1-1, but I don't believe anyone can be discontent with this result.” (FDC)
