Philippe Clement: “Our first half was one of the best this season”

Philippe Clement saw his team play a game with two faces: an excellent first half, followed by a far less second. But Club bagged the three points and increase the lead on the competition.

"The first half was one of the best of this season in terms of aggressiveness and the quality of our football with a lot of position switches and depth. And two fine goals. At half-time you know you have to get your players ready again, because the other team and coach have a lot of mentality. They will stand up and put a lot of pressure. We did not react well enough in that second half. In defence we played too many lateral passes which meant we didn't create enough depth, especially in the first half hour of the second period. The last quarter of an hour was better and we should have scored a third goal to put the game to bed. We got ourselves into trouble, also because of Sint-Truiden's strength, and that was not necessary. I have a lot of respect for Sint-Truiden. We've seen their last three games in which they gathered nine points against good teams, so we knew we had to be concentrated for ninety minutes."

Because of Hans Vanaken's suspension, Charles De Ketelaere played on his position. "I'm satisfied with what I saw from Charles. You can't just expect him to replace a player who won the Golden Boot twice. Obviously the absence of Hans is not easy, but Charles did well. He provided a wonderful assist and created depth. He was great at holding the ball and in the end he showed his qualities as centre forward, so we could take back control of the game."

Thanks to this win and the defeats of the competition, Club Brugge is now four points ahead of number two Genk and already nine of Charleroi, who are third. "We're happy to see that our closest competitors dropped points this weekend, but we focus on our games and we want to win as many as possible." (SF)
