We met with Ludovic Butelle, Stefano Denswil, Timmy Simons and coach Michel Preud’homme just after the defeat at Anderlecht.

Ludovic BUTELLE

“React as a group”

The best player for Club Brugge at Anderlecht was Ludovic Butelle, denying further damage with a number of fine saves. “We all realised just how important this game was, but unfortunately they were better than us. They are in a great flow, and today's game goes to show. This is our fourth PO game, the fourth we can't win, so that's a major disappointment. But it's not over for us now, it's never over.”
The defeat comes as a serious blow to the entire group. Butelle calls on everyone to regroup and put their heads together. “It's important to us to stay one team and to keep fighting for it. We now need a reaction on the pitch by all of us, as a group. We need to return to the team that goes for every ball, and tries to win every duel. That's what we work on at training, but unfortunately not with the desired effect. Keep it tight as a group, that's vital right now.” (JDN)

Stefano DENSWIL

“A serious downer”

Stefano Denswil had trouble coping with the defeat, and was very hard when it came to his analysis of the game. “They score two early goals, and then there's that red card by the end of the first 45. The second half came with a lot of dueling, but in the end we failed as a team. This was a weak performance. Things are not looking great for us right now. I reckon we now need to focus on a win first to regain a bit of confidence. That's what matters most now, not the title.”
The Dutchman was clueless as to the reason for the floppy start to these play-offs. “In all honesty, I don't know, we're trying to find out for ourselves. We started out well in our first game at Gent. But we lose and you think, "that's a game you can lose, but we'll flip it around in the next game, but so far that didn't pan out. Not winning is a serious downer, and it feels bad that we haven't gone back to the way we were in last season's po's.”
A win against Ostend could help in getting rid of the foul aftertaste of today's defeat. “Today, and tomorrow there will be nothing but disappointed faces at Club. But there's another game on Wednesday to help us get over this, and hopefully we can come out victorious. First try and win a game and gain some confidence, we'll see where we can go from there.” (JDN)

Timmy SIMONS

“Unable to get a grip on the game”

A disappointed captain Timmy Simons headed for the Mixed Zone after the game. “It just won't work out for us. It's about time we grabbed some points. I said as much last week: 'as long as you don't claim the points yourself, it's no use to start calculating.’ We should try and pick up the points in the coming games. No use in looking at the other teams, we need to perform first. We hoped for more today, particularly as they had had such a big game on Thursday. But it seems like you're unstoppable once you get in the flow. We tried to counter them with our qualities, but that didn't pan out. This is a mental blow, as we expected so much more out of this game. Unable to get a grip on the game, taking two early goals, ... One after an infiltration by Dendoncker, the second through a textbook situation. We had been forewarned about this, so we need to do better. The second half freed up some space, giving us a bit more room. But we only had one chance, through Wesley. It didn't go in, so it could go in two ways: either we try to go for more, or try to avoid a trashing.”
As to Vormer's red card, Simons said the following. “With his fighting spirit and work ethic, Ruud tries to keep the group focused. When you can feel that adrenalin, you try to help your team, with the result that you cross the line sometimes. That's a pity, but it is what it is.”
Simons now urges to team to reposition the focus on the KV Ostend game. “Another game on Wednesday. They follow quickly, but maybe that shouldn't be a bad thing.”
A nostalgic captain also thinks back about last year's PO's. “We were so eager to relive the fine moments we had last season. But apparently it's not all that evident to accomplish this two years in a row. We will give it all we got to obtain some good results still, we just can't think about this too long.” (JDN)

Michel PREUD’HOMME

“We miss last season's spirit”

It looks very much like Michel Preud’homme will not be renewing the title with Club this season, after the defeat at the Astrid Parc. “Anderlecht looks on the right track to make it. This was an all-or-nothing game for us, but only in the first ten minutes we showed our will to win. After that we lost duels, on the ground as well as in the air, and showcased a lack of focus and drive. When you can't even bring that to the table against a team of this calibre, full of confidence, you're bound to get into trouble. Too many lateral passing, too little depth and creativity. We had plenty of time to prepare for this game, training our tactic, but I didn't see any of it in the game. And that's asking for trouble. You can try and find excuses, but first of all you need to try and find a solution. In any event, it's clear that we are missing last season's spirit.”
Several players were not playing their usual game, but Club's coach did not want to address that in his talk with the press. “I won't be making any individual analyses. What I do know, is that I will only line up players who are still eager to play for Club Brugge. I won't take the past or specific qualities into account, only those who are willing to give it their all will be playing. When you take a look at how Claudemir came on: that's what I want to see. He gave everything for the team. His high pressure resulted in that one big chance we had, unfortunately not finished by Wesley.” (SF)
