Reactions after Waasland-Beveren - Club Brugge

We gathered comments after the game at the Freethiel from coach Juan Carlos Garrido, General Manager Vincent Mannaert and players Carlos Bacca, Lior Refaelov, Carl Hoefkens and Maxime Lestienne.

Juan Carlos GARRIDO

"Ideal start"

Juan Carlos Garrido appeared to have ensured a complete transformation after just one day. "This is a massive win, because we needed the three points badly. We have to climb in the standings as soon as possible. This big victory is ideal to start with. Not just for me, but for the entire team. However, this victory doesn't mean anything. I've seen many good things, but we still have a long way to go. We will focus on technique, tactics and fysics in the next coming weeks."
It was a huge difference with last week's performance, but the Spanish coach dismissed any praise: "I've only been here long enough for one training session, so it's way to early to judge my work. The players deserve the praise, because they played well. We tried out a couple of tactical situations yesterday and I already saw some of them today on the pitch. I believe the scoreline was a bit overdone, but this team proved already what it's worth. In any case I want to see an agressive and hard-working team. That's the basis of where I want to start working from." (SF)

Vincent MANNAERT

"We dedicate this victory to our fans"

Club's General Manager Vincent Mannaert was delighted to see Club Brugge stop the serie of defeats. "This is more fun than last week. We dedicate this victory to our fans. Despite of the many defeats of the last weeks, the fans were there to support us and that's why they definitely deserve this victory.
This win gives us more confidence. We score a lot of goals and even could have scored more. We can't overestimate this victory, but we shouldn't underestimate it either. Scoring six goals isn't so easy. This victory is very pleasing, but from tomorrow on we will focus on Thursday when we host Bordeaux." (SF)

Carlos BACCA

"My goals give me confidence"

Carlos Bacca scored twice, which puts him back in first place in the top scorers table of the Jupiler Pro League. "I'm very happy with this important victory. Today only the result mattered. But we shouldn't exagerate and remain calm. We scored six goals but we also conceded two goals. We have to look at the mistakes in defence and work on that. It's always great to welcome a new coach with an immediate victory instead of a defeat. There is a small effect, as we have only just been training with our new coach, but it's merely the attitude and the mentality of the team that has changed a little. But now we need to keep working hard and improve our play. My goals give me confidence, that's why I work hard on the training ground every day. But the most important are the three points. The coach had asked us to play football and to keep the ball in the team. Our squad is capable of playing dominant and be strong in the build-up. We need to improve more and be a tad more accurate in our passing." (MD)

Lior REFAELOV

"Everyone wanted to show themselves to the fans"

Lior Refaelov scored twice after being teed up by Maxime Lestienne. "This victory is important for everyone. It gives confidence to all players. With our quality we don't belong on that spot in the ranking. Anderlecht was a complete blow for us. We have suffered the past few weeks, it has been very tough. Everyone wanted to show themselves to the fans. Show that we don't give up and want to fight back. I feel very well, especially with my goals and assists. It's nice to be back with the team after my injury and play for the club. I hope we can continue like we played today, that's the key. We only had a little bit of time to work with our new coach the last two days. He focused on the organization and gave confidence to the players. This game gave us confidence for the coming games. Everyone needs to prove himself again, not the management or the fans. We, as players, need to take our responsibility and I hope every player will." (MDK)

Carl HOEFKENS

"This is what the coach wanted to see"

Club skipper Carl Hoefkens was very satisfied with the victory at the Freethiel. "It was a perfect start of the game with two early goals. Waasland-Beveren were completely overrun by us. They wanted to play, but we controlled the game perfectly and had a lot of possession of the ball. Passion and engagement. Every second of the game and in every action. That is what the coach wanted to see. You could argue that the big win is merely because of the opponent's weakness, but that's not completely true. We shouldn't be too enthusiastic but it's a first step in the right direction. And we entertained our fans since a long time. That pleases me a lot. Thursday we face Bordeaux, which is a far better team than Waasland-Beveren. They play a different kind of football but we have to try to do the same as today. We want to carry out the ideas of our coach on the pitch, but of course there are a couple of things that we need to improve. We have to realise that we are not there yet. But our confidence has risen for sure." (MD)

Maxime LESTIENNE

"We need to build from this point on"

Maxime Lestienne had an important share in the victory with one goal and four assists. "We wanted to show that we can play better football than we showed last week. We have carried out what the coach has asked us to do and that turned out brillantly. We need to build from this point on. Have I ever given four assists in one game? I don't think so. But I'm not a selfish player, so if I can play the ball to a teammate I will always do so. I've shown myself to the head coach, but there were more players performing on a high level today. We have for sure proven there is a lot of quality in our squad." (SF)
