Ruud Vormer: “Desperately wanted to win”
A sturdy STVV gave Club a run for its money for the majority of the game. Skipper Ruud Vormer, ill earlier this week, showed his relief after the tight 1-0 win.
“We desperately wanted to win. We knew Genk had drawn at Charleroi earlier this evening, so there really was only one option for us, and that was to win our game. It was a long time in the making, but I reckon we thoroughly deserve the victory. We had some fine chances in the first half, but it just didn't work out. After the break, we switched gears, and the visitors hardly crossed the middle line. That all-deciding goal was bound to come at one point.”
That goal finally came after Club was awarded a penalty kick, after Wesley was pulled down inside the box. "In all fairness, I haven't seen that incident just yet, but the ref very rigorously pointed towards the spot. This well deserved win takes us closer to Genk, bringing the divide back to six points, so we need to keep going. We now need those six final points, so we need to win at Eupen and at home vs Mouscron. We'll see how big the gap is after that as we take on the play-offs.” (FDC)
