Tonight at 20h45: Slask Wroclaw - Club Brugge

Kicking off their 42nd European campaign, Club Brugge make the trip to Poland to visit Slask Wroclaw in the EL Prelims. The mission for Club is obtaining a good away result, but the game at the rather imposing Meijski Stadion will not be a walk in the park. The second leg of the encounter is planned next week.

With no injuries or suspensions for “Klub Sportowy Slask Wroclaw Spolka Akcynja”, coach Stanislav Levy (Cze) will not have any selection woes. Levy saw reinforcement in the Summer coming from Israeli Oded Gavish, singing in from Hapoel Be’er Shiva. The 24-year-- old central defender, with stints at Maccabi Petah Tikva and Maccabi Herzliya, has been added to the selection, but will probably not be featuring from kick-off.

Other newcomers this season are a.o. Portuguese Marco Paixao (Ethnikos Achna), Brasilian Dudu (Lobos BUAP), Albanese Sebino Plaku (Skënderbeu) and Eric Mouloungui, on loan from Al Wahda for one season. The Gabon striker also played in Ligue 1 for Nice, Strasbourg and Gueugnon.

In Rok Elsner (Aris Saloniki), Marcin Kowalczyk (Volga Nizhny Novgorod), Piotr Cwielong (Bochum), Mateusz Fedyna (Miedz Legnica), Lukasz Gikiewicz (Omonia Nicosia) and Johan Voskamp (Sparta), however, Slask Wroclaw saw a number of players leave the team.

In the second preliminaries to the Europa League, Slask Wroclaw had no trouble getting past FK Rudar Pljevlja (Montenegro. The Polish won their home game 4-0, goals by Marco Paixao (2), Waldemar Sobota and Sebino Plaku. The game at Podgorica ended in a 2-2, goals by again Paixao and Sobota.

Things are not going as smoothly in the Polish Ekstraklasa. Two games down the road, the team is in 14th place after a 0-0 draw at Korona Kielce on the opening day, and a 2-3 home defeat vs Jagiellonia Bialystok. On Sunday, the team hosts the game against Wisla Krakow.

Tonight's game will be the 43rd European game for the club, founded in 1947, and part of the Polish top flight since 1964. Up until now, Slask Wroclaw was crowned champions twice (1977 and 2012), and won two Polish Cups. In 2012, the Polish Supercup was also added to the prize cabinet.

The away game at Slask Wroclaw puts Club Brugge's European counter to 264, and will be the fourth encounter with a Polish opponent. In 1978-1979, only weeks after the iconic lost Final at Wembley against Liverpool, Club was oiusted in the first round of the Champions' Cup by Wisla Krakow. In 1991-1992, Club proved more prolific than GKS Katowice, but in 2009-2010, Club needed a penalty shootout to get past Lech Poznan on its way to the Europa League.

13 years after his European debut against Flora Tallinn (Estonia), skipper Timmy Simons will be playing his 94th European game, 50 of them in Club jersey. He was only replaced once, in the home game against French Chateauroux.

Putting on the Club colours in Europe for the 20th time is Lior Refaelov, while this will also be Eidur Gudjohnsen's 20th official Club game. That's a lot lower than Maxime Lestienne's total, bringing it to 110 official games for Club. Juan Carlos Garrido will be Club's coach for the 30th time in a Club Brugge game. Kudos to our web reporter, Steven Floin, too, joining Club in Europe for the 25th time.

A 21 man strong selection made its way from Ostend airport to Poland yesterday. No Victor Vazquez, though. The former Barcelonista has not completely recovered from an ankle injury. Björn Engels and Oscar Duarte, both missing out on the opening game against Charleroi (ill and suspended), did board the plane. Mushaga Bakenga, Elton Monteiro and Jesper Jørgensen have not been selected, while Thomas Meunier, Jim Larsen and Vadis Odjidja are all progressing in their recovery.

Selection: Kujovic, Ryan, Dhoest, Høgli, Duarte, De Bock, Engels, Mechele, Simons, Adu, Blondel, Fourlanos, Verstraete, Coopman, Refaelov, Wang, Lestienne, Gudjohnsen, De Sutter, Dierckx and Bolingoli

One to watch

Slask Wroclaw - Marco Paixao

Text:

In all fairness: the names of any Wroclaw player will spring to mind. Still, Club will have to be careful for man in form Marco Paixao. Ever since his arrival at Slask, he accounted for half the goals of the team. Last Sunday, he scored against Jagiellonia Bialystok, and in the double encounter with Rudar he made his way to the nets three times, and offering the assist for Sobota's goal. So far, the 28 year old Portuguese has had a somewhat fickle carreer. A short period at FC Porto's B side was followed up with stays at Guijuelo, Logrones and Cultural Leonesa in Spain, only to join his twin brother Flavio at Hamilton in Canada. A further career move brought him to Naft Teheran (Iran), which he left for Ethnikos Achna (Cyprus), where he scored 15 goals in 31 games. At Slask Wroclaw, Marco Paixao signed a two-year contract.

Club Brugge - Jonathan Blondel

Text:

Given the premature expulsion of Timmy Simons and the attention preserved for Shangyuan Wang, many didn't spot the performance Jonathan Blondel pulled in against Charleroi. But it will not have gone unnoticed that the midfielder spurred on his team after the red card for Simons, eventually leading to a well-deserved winner on the opening day. Blondel's game is an unrelentless one, pushing on and fighting to win games, just what Club supporters want to see in any player wearing the Club jersey. He topped off his great game with an impressive long range strike in the final minute of the game. Blondel, out for a long time last season, fought back and deserves all the praise he gets. Jonathan Blondel is back, let there be no doubt about it.

The Man in Black

Mr. Anthony Taylor

Text:

The game between Slask Wroclaw and Club Brugge has been appointed to Mr Anthony Taylor. This will be the second European trip for the 34 year old Englishman, after having handled the whistle in the second CL prelim between Slovak Slovan Bratislava and Bulgarian Ludogorets Razgrad.

A Premier League ref since 2010, Mr. Anthony Taylor has had 25 games under his direction so far, among which Chelsea – Everton and Manchester City – Liverpool. In 2010, Mr. Taylor also had two Japanese J-League games, with Vissel Kobe – Gamba Osaka and Sanfrecce Hiroshima – Kyoto Sanga.

At the Meijski Stadium, Mr. Anthony Taylor will be assisted by his compatriots Mr. Stuart Burt and Mr. Peter Bankes and fourth official Jonathan Moss. Kick-off will be at 20h45.
