Het was Henk Houwaart die Ernst Happel voorstelde bij Club om coach te worden. Hij kende Happel als coach bij Den Haag.

In 1975, Houwaart was toen 30, vertrok hij naar Antwerp met coach Guy Thys. Tijdens de UEFA-cup wedstrijd (oktober 1975) tegen het Poolse Wroclaw, scheurde hij zijn kruisbanden bij het scoren van zijn allerlaatste doelpunt.
Na een maandenlange revalidatie stopte Houwaart met voetballen.
