Club beat Standard 3-0 in top game
Club Brugge won the top game against Standard. The blue and black were already 2-0 up after fifteen minutes play thanks to Denswil and Dennis, while MOTM Amrabat put the final score on the score sheet just past the half-hour mark: 3-0.
Ivan Leko picked the same eleven players who had drawn 0-0 at Borussia Dortmund last Wednesday, so with Amrabat patrolling the midfield again. This time Club didn't play as defensive and started the game very lively. Inside the first minutes the Standard defence had to clear Dennis' cross before Vanaken could tap in and Ochoa had to react well on a header by Wesley.
Club Brugge were rewarded quickly for their attacking mindset. Seven minutes into the game Vanaken found the unmarked Denswil at the far post and the Dutchman fired in the corner kick from close range.
Club were dominant and kept creating the better chances. Ochoa parried away Vanaken's free-kick, but he didn't stand a chance after Emmanuel Dennis's delicious one-two with Vanaken and smart finish into the far corner. The Nigerian injured himself unfortunately and had to be replaced by Cyril Ngonge who made his debut for Club.
Club slowed the game a bit down after the high-tempo start, but Standard didn't look like clawing themselves back into the game. On the contrary, Amrabat put the hosts even more comfortable in the driving seat with a third goal. Vormer's cleared cross fell into the path of the Dutchman who slotted home unstoppably from outside the area.
Vanaken and Wesley tried their luck as well, but couldn't bulge the net a fourth time.
Clinton Mata was replaced by Saulo Decarli during half-time, while Michel Preud'homme brought on forward Orlando Sa at the start of the second half. The Rouches wanted to pull one back as quickly as possible, but Club had proven in Germany to be excellent in defence. Apart from Luyindama's header, Standard failed to put pressure on Club's defence.
Denswil almost scored his second of the afternoon, but he aimed his free-kick just wide at the far post.
Club were fully in control, but needed a top-drawer save by Horvath on Vanheusden's header minute to keep the three goal lead. Club responded through Ngonge who darted into the penalty box, went past Luyindama and Vanheusden, but saw his low drive parried away by Ochoa. Almost a first goal for Ngonge on his maiden appearance! Minutes later Vanaken just couldn't score on Wesley's low cross.
Orlando Sa scored a header for the visitors on a well-taken free-kick, but Sa had strayed offside and the goal was chalked off.
In the final ten minutes of the match, the blue and black tried to please the fans with a fourth goal. Amrabat tried to score his second goal for Club and came close twice. First Ochoa tipped his long-range shot away and a few minutes later the goalkeeper needed a good save to keep out Amrabat's brilliant backheel.
In the closing moments Mechele headed over the crossbar while former Club Brugge forward Obbi Oulare skied his finish. Djenepo was booked a second time and sent off.
Club Brugge beat Standard 3-0 and jump to second place in the Jupiler Pro League.
