Club - Beerschot VA: Club Facts

Last Sunday Club bagged its first three points following a convincing 0-4 win against KAS Eupen. Newly promoted side Beerschot VA took a flying start with six points out of six and ar Club's next opponent. Learn more about this fixture with our Club Facts.

Coach Philippe Clement wrote down three new names on his tactical board for the game against Eupen, compared to the home match against Sporting Charleroi. Simon Deli and Emmanuel Dennis were sidelined with an injury and replaced by Federico Ricca and Siebe Schrijvers. Mats Rits forced Éder Balanta on the bench.

Club took the lead at the Kehrweg after fifteen minutes play. After a quick break, Eduard Sobol picked out Youssouph Badji with a deep cross and the 18-year-old volleyed it in past Ortwin De Wolf from an acute angle.

After the break the blue and black doubled the lead when Diatta struck home from 25 meters out. The third Senegalese goal of the afternoon came from Diatta again. In the 76th minute Ruud Vormer darted into the penalty box to head in Hans Vanaken's cross. The captain's goal was the last of the afternoon.

Former clubs

Next sunday the champions of 1A and 1B face each other. League leaders Beerschot VA is the second team to visit Jan Breydel this season. For the first time in nearly eight years matrical numbers 3 and 13 will play an official game. The last one dates back to 9 December 2012 when Club crushed Beerschot 1-7.

Club won 49 games of the previous 78 home matches against Beerschot. The last defeat dates back to 21 November 2009 when Beerschot beat Club 1-2.

The game against his former club is Philippe Clement's 50th as head coach of Club Brugge since returning in the summer of 2019. He was at the helm for 31 league games so far (22W, 7D, 2L), six cup games (3W, 2D, 1L), 10 Champions League fixtures (3W, 4D, 3L) and two Europa League matches (1D, 1L).

Both Philippe Clement and Beerschot coach Hernán Losada have a history at Beerschot. Both ended their playing careers there, yet didn't play there at the same time. Clement defended the colours of Beerschot for five seasons (1990-1995) before returning in 2009 for two more years. In 2011 he ended his career as a player.

Losada started his career in Belgium at Beerschot. He played there from 2006 until 2008. Afterwards he had two more spells at the team in Antwerp: from 2001 until 2013 and from 2015 until 2018.

Club Brugge players Mats Rits, Thomas Van Den Keybus and Ignace Van Der Brempt have a history at Beerschot. Former Club Brugge Acadamy player Dario Van Den Buijs joined Beerschot this summer.

Eduard Sobol can play his 40th official match for Club, Brandon Mechele his 175th. Mignolet can defend the goal for the 30th time in the league.

The opposition

Beerschot is a name that has a ring to it in Belgium, eventhough it's a tale of highs and lows. Founded in 1899 as the Royal Beerschot Football and Athleticos Club, the team won the Belgian league seven times in the twenties and thirties. In 1999 Beerschot went into administration for the first time and went on as Germinal Beerschot Antwerpen, playing at the Olympic Stadium. In 2013 disaster struck again, when GBA went into administration. This time Beerschot merged with KFCO Wilrijk and played the home games at the Kiel. The team promoted four years in a row after winning their league four times, until reaching the Belgian second division 1B. But then the team failed to win the promotion game in 2018 and 2019.

Last year Beerschot-Wilrijk was renamed to K. Beerschot VA and bought their matrical number 13 again.

Third time's a charm - also for Beerschot. This summer Beerschot won 1B and promoted to the Belgian top flight.

It's been a succesful return to the first division for Beerschot. After two fixtures they lead the pack with 6 points out of 6, following a 1-2 at Oostende on the opening fixture thanks to two goals by Cameroon striker Noubissi. Last weekend Raphael Holzhauzer was the match winner with two goals and an assist for Tissoudali in the 3-1 win against Zulte Waregem.
