Club wins top game against AA Gent 4-0
Club Brugge cruised past AA Gent with a 4-0 victory. Hans Vanaken and Krépin Diatta gave Blauw-Zwart a comfortable 2-0 half-time lead and after the break Dennis and Diagne doubled it.
Club entertained AA Gent with the same line-up that grabbed a point against Real Madrid on Tuesday. The draw at Bernabéu was a moral boost for the boys in blue and black. They grabbed this game by the scruff of the neck. Sobol skied the first effort, but a few minutes later the visitors' defence needed to be watchful to clear Vormer's cross before Dennis could be dangerous.
Club's captain looked like scoring moments later, but the Dutchman tried to tee up Dennis instead of shooting himself.
Club now bossed proceedings and deservedly broke the deadlock after eleven minutes. After great build-up play Diatta picked out Hans Vanaken with his cross and the Golden Boot headed in brilliantly. Club wanted a second one, but Kaminski fisted away Dennis' cross and shortly after Mechele headed over the crossbar.
Club dominated the visitors, but Gent had a big chance when Dejaegere beat the offside trap, but Mignolet was brilliant to keep out his his shot via the post.
Blauw-Zwart immediately hit back hard on the half-hour mark. Percy Tau was first denied, but Krépin Diatta pounced home the loose ball to double the lead. Dejaegere had another effort at goal, but Mignolet wasn't bothered.
Club mustered a couple of good chances to get a bigger lead at half-time. First Schrijvers - who replaced the injured Tau - scuffed his finish wide and afterwards Plastun cleared his cross before Dennis could be dangerous.
Club was hungry for more and the blue and black tried to score a third goal right after the break. Kaminski parried away Schrijvers' shot and Diatta failed to score on the rebound. But after five minutes Emmanuel Dennis dispossessed Plastun and fired it unstoppably past Kaminski.
The visitors didn't give up quickly. Gent wanted a consolation goal and the chance to claw themselves back into the game. Kums' let one fly just wide of the goal and Simon Mignolet showed his class again to deny Depoitre, Odjidja and David. When the goalkeeper looked defeated, Mata was there to keep Depoitre from scoring.
Club's defence was solid as a rock, even a header by Yaremchuk and a good strike by Odjidja didn't make Club nervous.
In the final moments of the game Club created the better chances. After a great cross by Okereke, Schrijvers tapped the ball over the crossbar and when the Nigerian played Diagne through on goal, Kaminski saved the effort.
Deep into stoppage Club got a fourth goal nonetheless when Mbaye Diagne fired in on a corner kick by Vanaken.
A big and clear 4-0 win for Club Brugge who are now six points clear of third placed Gent.
