Last minute Diatta screamer hands Club a point

Dramatic! That's the least you can say about Club Brugge's CL game at Galatasaray yesterday. An early Büyük goal left Club chasing for the majority of the game, only to see its attacking efforts finally rewarded in injury time as Krépin Diatta's clever curl offered Blauw-Zwart a well-merited point. The draw leaves Club in the running for that coveted third place with a spot in the Europa League in January.

Four changes to the team that had beaten KV Ostend on Friday. Philippe Clement opted for Federico Ricca at the expense of Eduard Sobol, while Éder Balanta made up for Ruud Vormer's absence. Up front, Krépin Diatta was handed another chance alongside Emmanuel Dennis and Loïs Openda, calling Siebe Schrijvers and David Okereke to the bench.

Galatasaray desperately needed a win to still make something out of this European campaign, and headed forward from the very first minute. One minute down the track, Simon Mignolet pawed away Büyük's free kick at full stretch, and the bicycle kick that followed sailed over. Club also proved industrious, with Diatta's cross not meeting Openda in front of goal, and Mechele aiming Diatta's corner kick in the side netting at the first post. Just as Club seemed to be taking over, the hosts struck relentlessly: Adem Büyük was found in front of goal, keeping off Deli, and hammering the ball in from close range.

A frenetic home crowd went berserk, but Blauw-Zwart was unabashed, and now really started taking matters in hand, trying to push Galatasaray back. Muslera saved a shot by Dennis, Rits found Openda in front of goal but his deviation missed target, and Diatta saw his attempt whizz over. The best chance came with ten minutes to go in the first half: Diatta was sent through on the right wing, pulling it towards Openda who saw his fine shot saved again by an attentive Muslera, also denying Vanaken's header in the centre of goal.

With Charles De Ketelaere on for Mats Rits, the visitors kept looking for that equaliser. An excellent opportunity came to Dennis, who was given some space inside the box, but decided to go for his own shot too long, and aimed the ball against a wide open Muslera. Galatasaray reached with a Bayram free kick ending up just wide, while Hans Vanaken saw his free kick eagerly clutched by a seemingly unsurpassable Muslera.

Club was forced to take the foot of the pedal a bit, leaving space for the Turkish hosts . Büyük stretched to make the most of Bayram's cross, but saw it bounce over, while Lemina aimed high over, and Mignolet got his hands to Feghouli's shot. With Schrijvers and Okereke now also on, Club had lined up all of its strikers, and the both had a fine shot straight on: a pull-back to Schrijvers was shot over in one go, but what Okerkee created was more goal worthy. Ricca fumbled the ball in the path of the Nigerian, who came eye-to-eye with Muslera, but couldn't curl the ball well enough to tuck it in by the far post.

Blauw-Zwart kept coming in the dying minutes of the game; Okereke pulled back to De Ketelaere, but he was unable to get a good grip of the ball. Five additional minutes proved the saviour, however, for Club. Krépin Diatta, industrious but a bit unlucky throughout the game, cut inside with one of his great rushes, aimed for the far corner and saw the ball go in past a hapless Muslera. 1-1, and the Ali Sami Yen silenced! In celebrating that golden goal, the Senegalese took off his shirt, earning him a second yellow. To make matters worse, Mata also conceded a second yellow in those hefty celebrations. Club was now down to nine, but fortunately the score did not change, earning Club a vital draw and all the chances to procede in Europe after the Winter break.
