The Blues canned Besiktas with forfait figures and that was not even an exaggeration. So it was with pride that Maxim De Cuyper looked back on the match.
"We did not dare to dream of this. Especially not with the figures that were on the scoreboard at the end. We came here for the three points but if you can achieve it this way, you can be proud," laughed the left-back of the Blues.
This performance clearly did a lot of good. "It was an overall team performance. We were good both defensively and offensively. The defence was stable and therefore didn't have much work either. Something like that is important in an away game because chances come at the other end anyway."
Since Bodø/Glimt won as well, the Blues are not yet sure of the group win. Within two weeks, the Norwegians come to the Jan Breydelstadium. "It is unfortunate that we are not yet sure tonight," said De Cuyper, "but then we have to make sure we finish it ourselves in that last match. If we deliver the same performance as today, it should be possible."
"It was the perfect moment to build confidence. Especially when you score again so early in the second half, you can give minutes and confidence to different players, players who can then score goals and give assists as well. That is important for the team," concluded the youngster, who himself was substituted 15 minutes before the final whistle. (EV)
