The bitter defeat at KV Kortrijk as a topic, we had a talk with Mathew Ryan, Ruud Vormer, Thomas Meunier, Tom De Sutter and coach Michel Preud'homme.

“Both feet on the ground again”

Mathew Ryan's Australia bagged the Asian Cup last week, and the goalie made it back to Belgium on Wednesday, reclaiming his spot from the first opportunity he had. "I'm very disappointed. We knew Kortrijk would try to use the long ball to get past our defense, but were still fooled, and that makes it all the more frustrating. Despite the bad pitch, we managed to create a few great chances, but it was never successful, which makes you chase the game, really. I'm sure we can beat Kortrijk, just like we showed in the Cup game, but today it didn't go our way. It's not an issue to be losing 2-0 today, but it has put me back with both feet on the ground. As of tomorrow, we'll be working hard again as Cercle awaits on Wednesday. When the were awarded that penalty, I had a sense of déjà-vu. Last season, a clean tackle by Björn Engels was also incorrectly charged, and today Brandon Mechele suffered the same fate. But don't go thinking that this is a mental blow to us.” (FDC)

Ruud VORMER

“The first game I lose at Blauw-Zwart”

Ruud Vormer also had difficulty concealing his disappointment. The midfielder did what he could, but was also unable to keep Club from suffering its first defeat in 32 games. "We lost 2-0, we didn't deserve that. It's the first game I lose since I'm at Club. It's a pity that it happened here today at Kortrijk. First of all, Santini should always be sent off after the very first minute, but the ref faltered. Ten minutes into the game, you concede that goal, but at half time we really should have been 1-3 ahead, no doubt about it. If this game was played on a normal pitch, we would be the ones cheering and not them. But, if and when, that's not how you win games. They were backed by their enthusiastic fans, which made the ref whistle every dubious situation in their favour. Kortrijk is a sturdy team, and once they take the lead they're hard to beat. Not only the state the pitch was on, but also the size of it is in the home team's favour. As a team that likes to play creative football, it's key to take the lead, and lure them out of their organisation. Just like we did in our Cup game here. We were forced to play the long ball, so to speak, and that's not our natural game. This sucks, especially to be losing like this, but we just have to keep going and keep producing the fine football we did before, and it will all turn out well.” (FDC)

Thomas MEUNIER

“Missed too many chances”

It was bound to happen one day, but being defeated at Kortrijk was a serious downer. Most players were down the dumps. Despite the 2-0 defeat, Thomas Meunier reckoned Club had played a good game. "I think we missed too many chances. I don't know how many clear cut chances we had, but I do believe there were enough to win this game. The fact that Kortrijk managed to win it in the end, we called upon ourselves. We weren't helped by the man in black either. Why? Because he always should have sent Santini off after that elbow in the first minute. When they took the lead after just ten minutes, you just knew it was going to be tough to win here. After their goal, they hardly played football, and they tried to keep us out of our rhythm using any means the could. But, oh well, we had to lose one day, but it's still a bit sour because we owe it to ourselves; they really didn't outplay us. This defeat is not knock-out, of course, but we'll have to make sure we work hard in last five games of the season so we can take on the play-offs with a nice gap.” (FDC)

Tom DE SUTTER

“Bad condition of the pitch really hampered our play”

Claiming that Kortrijk played a massive game and that Club was nowhere is twisting reality. Moreover, Club played well, but in football the goals are what counts, and that's where the difference between the two teams lied today. Tom De Sutter agreed. "We knew this was going to be a tough job. But nevertheless, I reckoned we created a good bunch of chances. Despite the 1-0 down, we tried to get into our usual rhythm, but when you see that e.g. Joske (Izquierdo, edit) puts the ball high over instead of in goal, you can see that the bad condition of the pitch hampered our play. The ref also brought some dubious decisions to the table, or allowed to play on when he should have stopped, and that was also to our disadvantage. We knew it was going to be tough, but I repeat: when you miss clear chances you know it's going to be hard to take anything from this game. A correct penalty? You would have to ask Brandon (Mechele, edit) himself, but I don't think that was a correct decision either.” (FDC)

Michel PREUD’HOMME

“This won't change the way we work”

Michel Preud’homme saw how his team lost for the first time since the game at KV Mechelen on 24 August. "I see two reasons for this defeat. First of all, the way Kortrijk plays unsettles us. So it's no surprise that we stranded here. Last year, we also lost this game. The second reason is that we just didn't finish our chances. Our second half was not that good, we were rushing things, and we weren't always making the right movement at the rigth time. That's how this defeat came about. But when you play a game, you sometimes have to accept the fact that you can lose. We'll analyse our demise here. But we also learned our lesson from games we didn't lose. This will not change the way we work. We managed to win here in the Cup. But if I have to lose at Kortrijk, I prefer it today rather than in the Cup.” (SF)
