Monday night KA Akureyri played their last league game before travelling to Belgium for the game against Blauw-Zwart in the third preliminary round of the UEFA Conference League. The team from the north of Iceland lost 4-2 to Valur Reykjavik, second in the standings and the team where Arnar Grétarsson is coach. Grétarsson was sporting director at Club and is a former Lokeren player.
The home team showed sharpness in front of goal in the first half and ran out to a comfortable 3-0 lead already in the first half. Akureyri also threatened, but lacked sharpness in front of goal. A goal for the visitors followed in the second half: Sveinn Margeir Huaksson headed a Steingrimsson cross into the goal. Hopes for more were soon dashed by a fourth goal from Valur a few minutes later. Coach Hallgrimur Jonasson then made several substitutions to turn the tide. After three quarters of the game, the visitors were awarded another penalty kick. Striker Asgeir Sigurgeirsson converted the eleven-meter, but Akureyri got no further.
KA Akureyri remains in seventh place in 'Besta Deildin' at twenty-three points from leader Vikungur Reykjavik. (KN)
