KA Akureyri loses 4-2 in the league

UEFA Conference League

On Monday night, KA Akureyri played their last league game before making their way to Belgium for their game against Blauw-Zwart in the third preliminary round of the UEFA Conference League. The team from northern Iceland went down 4-2 at Valur Reykjavik, second in the table, and the team of coach Arnar Grétarsson. In a previous stint in his career, Grétarsson was sporting director at Club and played at Sporting Lokeren.

The home team showed sharpness in front of goal in the first half and ran out to a comfortable 3-0 lead. Akureyri also threatened, but lacked focus in front of goal. In the second half, a visiting goal followed, Sveinn Margeir Huaksson tapping in a cross from Steingrimsson. Hopes for more were soon destroyed by a fourth Valur goal a few minutes later.

In an attempt to turn the tide, Coach Hallgrimur Jonasson then made some substitutions, and three quarters into the game, the visitors were awarded another penalty. Striker Asgeir Sigurgeirsson converted the spot kick, but Akureyri proved unable to turn things further around.

KA Akureyri remain in seventh place in 'Besta Deildin', twenty-three points off leaders Vikungur Reykjavik. (KN)
